The Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna

The Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna

One of the world’s largest museums of fine arts is located in the Austrian capital Vienna. Both the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History face each other across Maria-Theresien-Platz. They were built in 1891. Unique twins-museums designed in the Italian Renaissance style are surrounded by the picturesque park. Rich exhibitions they offer to visit always attract a lot of tourists.

The collection kept in the Fine Arts Museum is based on the collection of the Imperial House of Habsburg. Today, the incredibly rich heritage of the museum includes an art gallery, the collection of coins, collections of art brought from Middle East and Egypt. When exploring the heritage of the museum, you can also see Greek and Roman antiquities, as well as collections of sculptures and decorative arts. The huge Art Gallery offers valuable paintings of Raphael, Rubens, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Veronese, Brueghel the Elder, Van Dyck, Titian and other recognised masters of painting.

Today, the Kunsthistorisches Museum houses the famous Viennese Kunstkammer, one of the largest in the world. Here you can see more than two thousand valuable exhibits from the collection of the Habsburgs. Medieval jewellery, antique clocks, carvings, sculptures, tapestries and many other items of bygone eras are presented in the Kunstkammer. Its main treasure is The Saliera – the gold salt cellar by Benvenuto Cellini, created in the 16th century. The oldest exhibit is the ivory board of the 9th century.

The Museum of Fine Arts is open daily, except Mondays, from 10am to 6pm, on Thursdays – to 9pm. Entrance fee is about 14 euros. Persons under 19 years old can visit the museum free of charge, but do not forget identity document.

Getting there: from Westbahnhof Station, you can take the subway of the line U3 to Volkstheater Stop; from Südbahnhof Station, you should use the tram line D to Burgring/Kunsthistorisches Museum Stop.
